Administration Reveals Government Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Nears Three-Week Mark
Administration officials confirmed the start of government employee layoffs on Friday, following through on earlier warnings linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.
Official Announcement and Initial Details
The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s process for letting employees go.
Although Vought provided no details on which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson indicated that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.
Labor Reaction and Court Actions
Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services used by the public and vowed to challenge the moves in the legal system.
“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide critical services to the public nationwide,” stated a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute
Congressional Democrats have refused to support a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be resolved soon.
